Gratuitous Violence Against Cats

I fear I am observing an emergent, disturbing trend. Over the Holidays, I had an unexpected 3 days off in a row. I did something I haven't done for a long time; I binge-watched a show on Netflix. I watched both seasons of " Stranger Things". I started on Christmas in the evening and stayed up until 4am watching Season 1 in its entirety. Tuesday, I took a break from it and, then, on Wednesday, I watched all of Season 2. I loved it. The only thing I hated was the cat being eaten by Dart, one of the many weirdly-shaped, flower monsters. Why did it have to be a cat that died?
Then, today, I went to see "The Shape of Water". The director is one of my favorites and the trailer I saw appealed to me. In it, a woman and an amphibious creature fall in love. She even continues interacting with him AFTER he eats one of her friends' cats. Ummm . . . Red Flag behavior. Show him the door pronto. For me, this was almost a great movie but it was marred by gratuitous domestic violence against a cat. I felt the cat hissing at the Creature was enough and certainly consistent with the story.
