Early March Dog Walks with Yoshi

I never wanted a dog. I didn't want a high maintenance pet that has to be taken out for walks 3 times a day and can't be left alone for long periods. Then, I got an accidental dog. I don't even know why I said I would take him. I do cats. Now, however, I don't know what I would do without this happy little black dog who loves his walks. Recently, it was cold for several days in a row which isn't that unusual around here in the Winter. Yoshi only weighs 10 lbs. He has minimal body fat and a short fur coat. Bathroom breaks are, of necessity, quick when it is cold outside. I feel bad when he can't get out for walks.  Then again, maybe, I'm the one who misses the walks.
It is getting nice outside periodically and I can take Yoshi on longer walks. He smells everything. I like to take my time and be able to let him do that. Simple pleasures are underrated for dogs and people.  I have come to enjoy our walks too. He is such a funny little dog. Tomorrow, there is a 5K that goes right through this neighborhood. There have been signs up informing residents  of this for about a week. Yoshi has peed on every one of the signs.
On Wednesday, I had the day off and it was relatively nice out so we took a long afternoon walk together. I let him lead me up 37th, North on Pennsylvania, West on Valentine and, then, south on Jefferson. As we turned the corner from Valentine onto Jefferson, I heard  low, hollow-sounding, repetitive thumps coming from above.  I stopped us so that I could look up. On the Southwest side high up in the nearly dead tree (hence the hollow sound) was a Pileated Woodpecker doing its thing: boring long, thin holes in wood while not getting brain damage. Wow. They are an unexpectedly big, crow-size bird. We see all sorts of things and people and dog friends on our walks
Last Friday, I saw Jon. We were on 38th and just about at Pennsylvania when we ran into a neighbour walking 2 of Yoshi's friends so we stopped so they could visit.  The neighbors come in and visit me at work sometimes. I looked up briefly and saw a tall, thin man walking west and crossing Pennsylvania right at 38th. I have not seen him in a long time. It's good to know he is still alive.  He was wearing his camouflage army coat and a hat but I don't remember what kind. Although, now that I think of it, he was wearing some type of ball cap. He was wearing his black cross body bag, the one Yoshi stole the Hickory Farms summer sausages out of and ate in their entirety.
