A Hawk and a Life Lesson on a Sunday Morning

At about  9am, I was walking back to my apartment with Yoshi, whom I had just taken out for his morning walk.  Another clear-blue sky hot late August day was in the works. Yoshi trotted happily ahead as I walked hanging on to his leash on the sidewalk that leads from the Rose Courtyard of the apartment complex to our apartment when I, absent- mindedly, heard a whoosh not far over my head that sounded like canvas flapping tightly in the wind. Maybe, the sound was magnified because the 2 buildings on either side of me blocked it to some extent and caused an echo very close to my ear. I don't know. I also felt a swoosh of air. I could feel some intriguing energy in it made me turn so I did.  Maybe, somebody or something had zapped ferociously colliding atoms into the wind such that ordInary humans such as myself could perceive them. Either way, I turned 180 degrees to face North and the courtyard. I suppose Yoshi turned too. He probably had to because he was on his leash. Th...

Life lessons from Dean & #Supernatural (Written in October 2020)

I have slowly been making my way through 15 seasons of "Supernatural". My unofficial goal is to be caught up when the final 7 episodes air in real-time starting October 8th.  Is "Supernatural" the best show ever and everyone should watch it? Not necessarily. That being said what it does do it does very well and it rides a fine line between being hokey and being endearing and I think that is why I like it. What does it do well? Every episode is different although some episodes as well as seasons have story arcs but the characters of Sam and Dean Winchester remain constant. What they do seems improbable but they are very much human even if they do visit Hell and Purgatory and die several times. The beauty of the Winchester's is that they come back from Hell and are reborn after every death and there are metaphorical lessons in there for all of us.       Supernatural follows 2 brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who are Hunters and that's H...

Flap, Flap, Flap, Glide

"Flap. Flap. Flap. Glide." That has stayed with me from wherever I originally heard or read of it. I looked up as I was walking north about lunchtime on the sidewalk of a busy street.  I always look up periodically when I am walking. There are a lot of pigeons around here but you never know when a hawk will cross your path.  I saw a bird fly over the road far in front of me from northwest to northeast. It flew out of sight momentarily but, then, crossed back over the road going west and it was much closer. Flap. Flap. Flap. Glide. Another "flap, flap, flap glide" came from over the buildings and trees due East. There was two of them.  At first, I thought they were hunting together but I don't think Cooper's Hawks do that.  Maybe, it was a pair of this year's nestmates working together and perfecting their hawk skill-set. Likely, it was two juveniles who are passing through on their way South or, maybe, they will just stay here for the winter. The...

A Quarter for a Casket

While I was waiting for a cab yesterday outside a local Walmart, a short guy wearing a light blue t shirt & a Royals' hoodie approached me from my right. He said something to me but I couldn't understand it. As he got closer, he asked again and this time I could hear that he was requesting 25¢ to help pay for his daughter's casket. He said she died on Sunday from Covid. I have lived in the city awhile. Being asked for money is a given. One time, a guy asked me for 25¢ to ride the bus. At the time, bus fare was $1.50. I guess when you ask people for money you probably play the long odds and ask everyone who goes by for a quarter. Eventually, you will probably have money for bus fare and, maybe, even for a casket.  I doubted the veracity of his tale but I gave him 75¢ because that was how many quarters I had. After that happened, I began to wonder if I have some bullseye on my person and it is only visible to certain people because the "quarter for a casket episo...

Bent Orange Vodka

I cut the alcoholic Freezer Pop open and wondered how it would taste. I like Freezer Pops and I thought the "Bent Orange" flavor would be good. I wasn't a big fan of Vodka but liked the pseudo-orange flavor of cheap Freezer Pops. "Bent Orange" sounded like a fun flavor. I snipped a sliver off the top and squished it back and forth to break up the ice. I was looking forward to the taste of "Bent Orange". I took my 1st sip of it & tasted not orange flavor at all but vodka. I felt stymied. Where was the Orange deliciousness with a hint of Vodka that I could eat quickly & catch a nice buzz with after my busy shift at work. I'm not a big drinker of alcohol. Coffee is more my vice of choice. I wouldn't know good Grey Goose Vodka from the "Well" brand so I wouldn't know if the over-powering taste of Vodka from the alcoholic freezer pop was what it was all about. I couldn't get past it. The freezer pop began to melt quickly a...
